This New Medical Discovery Flushes The Root Cause of Acne Right Out of Your Cells

setembro 15, 2022 de kwok0781

(Toronto, CA) — In 1971, a famous dermatologist made an accidental discovery that took the scientific world by storm:

He discovered a compound with the remarkable power to flush acne out of the skin.

When he applied this compound to the skin of his patients, it stimulated their skin cells to turn over faster. This acceleration forced out clogs and sebum trapped inside the pores.

Why does this matter? Because scientists have known for a long time that…

Accelerating skin turnover unclogs pores and releases all of the gunk trapped in the skin

That’s right. The reason why this dermatologist’s discovery was so impressive was because it literally had the power to cleanse away years of clogs within months.

However, despite its powerful benefits, his discovery had one major drawback:

It caused irritation — lots of irritation, to the point where many patients had to stop treatment before they could see results.

In fact, to this day, most patients are reluctant to use retinoids even though they are one of the most effective prescriptions in stopping acne.

But in 2017, a tele-dermatology startup called Clearly made a breakthrough that is disrupting the skincare industry and frightening the acne giants…

Clearly found a way to reap the powerful benefits of retinoids while eliminating negative side effects

Clearly is a tele-dermatology platform which connects hundreds of dermatologists with their patients online, facilitating the process of prescribing acne treatments without the need for in-person visits.

Clearly’s subscribers send their acne selfies and dermatologists would prescribe custom-formulated medications based on their photos.

What Clearly discovered after thousands of prescriptions was shocking: patients of all skin types came with different kinds of acne, yet dermatologists prescribed a very narrow set of ingredients over and over again. It’s almost as if there is a single multitool which doctors use to stop all types of acne, hidden in the collective wisdom of these dermatologists.

Clearly immediately realized it was an opportunity to disrupt the acne industry’s usual solutions: benzyl peroxide and salicylic acid. As we all know, these two drug store ingredients typically act as band-aids but provide little to no help in actually fixing the problem for good.

Here are the top tools dermatologists consistently use to treat acne:

Dermatologists’ most prescribed acne fixes:

Medical-Grade Retinol

Retinol accelerates skin turnover — so much so in fact that after just 7 days, most patients get tiny flakes of dead skin. It is a sign that they likely have congested pores.

Think of retinol as a way of waking up the skin.  It flushes out the dead skin clogging your pores and promotes collagen to fill in acne scars.

Medical Grade Azelic Acid

More than half of acne treatments at your drug store use salicylic acid — a compound that helps break down skin cells. But did you know that the salicylic you see in your drug store acne aisle — typically formulated at 2% — does little to stop acne? To break up a clog, you need much higher concentrations of salicylic acid.

While a dermatologist can prescribe salicylic acid at up to 30% concentrations, this will burn the skin. In fact, 20% to 30% salicylic acid serums are typically used to burn off warts and calluses on the feet.

That’s why dermatologists prefer to prescribe azelic acid — a compound with similar benefits to salicylic acid but without the irritation. In fact, azelic acid calms the skin and reduces inflammation while breaking up clogs. Clearly uses azelic acid in concentrations 4x higher than the maximum limit for salicylic acid.

Combining dermatologists’ #1 and #2 most-prescribed acne treatments into a single lotion would be like assembling the superheroes to wage war against acne.  However, these two powerful ingredients are rarely seen together in a single lotion.

How to use retinol + azelic acid to get rid of acne for good

After discovering that these two powerful ingredients were consistently used by dermatologists to stop acne, Clearly uncovered three more shocking facts:

  1. There is an optimal concentration of retinol and azelic acid which maximizes their effectiveness while minimizing irritation. This would be impossible to achieve if the retinol and azelic acid were coming from separate lotions.
  2. It is rare to find retinol and azelic acid mixed together as the two ingredients exist in different forms in their natural states.
  3. The two ingredients work best on different layers of the skin. To be effective, two different delivery systems need to be integrated inside of a single lotion.

Clearly identified the world’s highest quality sources of retinol and azelic acid — and began experimenting to find the optimal balance of both ingredients in a single, combined formula.

They sourced the world’s highest quality retinol — nearly 5x more expensive than standard retinol. Why? Because this retinol is encapsulated in a protective sheath and releases only after it has penetrated into the deeper layers of your skin, offering its benefits exactly where and when it is most needed.

They went to even more extreme lengths to source medical-grade azelic acid — nearly 15x more expensive than standard azelic acid.  The potency and purity of this azelic acid makes it much more effective in breaking down clogs without damaging your skin barrier.

After thousands of trials, Clearly created the perfect recipe in order to deliver retiniol + azelic acid in a single bottle.

In other words, they fixed three key issues which the giant pharma companies could not solve:

  1. The perfect blend of retinol + azelic acid to maximize the effectiveness of both ingredients while minimizing negative side effects.
  2. Two different delivery systems were integrated into a single lotion in order to deliver each ingredient to the correct layer of skin and maximize absorption.
  3. A botanical complex was added to further strengthen the skin and promote healing of acne scars.

And that’s when Clearly realized they had created Clear Out…

The world’s only lotion with medical-grade retinol + azelic acid + pracaxi to immediately flush out dead skin cells and clogs – removing the root cause of acne

Unlike traditional band-aid acne solutions, Clear Out strikes at the root cause of acne to provide long-lasting results.

Many users who previously reported that no product ever worked to fix their acne are for the first time ever enjoying clear, acne-free skin thanks to this new formula.

But that’s not the best part…

Clear Out’s effectiveness is protected by an ironclad 90-day money-back guarantee

It’s easy to make big promises, but most brands don’t put their money where their mouth is.

That’s why Clearly makes a bold guarantee:

If after 90 days of using Clear Out you do not see a reduction or total disappearance of your acne — you will get your money back. This applies even if you’ve used the entire bottle of Clear Out and you don’t need to ship anything back.

This completely removes the risk of trying Clear Out — you have nothing to lose except your pimples!

They are able to offer this guarantee because Clearly has an incredible track record of beating acne, and they know you will experience life-changing results.

Benefits of Clear Out

  • Flushes out existing clogs to free trapped sebum responsible for acne
  • Removes excess dead skin to stop future clogs from forming
  • Accelerates healing and minimizes post-acne tissue damage
  • Fights visible signs of aging
  • And much, much more!

Order Clear Out while it’s still available

After being featured in several major publications recently, Clear Out is quickly running out of stock. Clearly’s suppliers recently issued a statement regarding supply chain issues.

Also, due to inflation pressures, it is likely that Clear Out will be listed for a higher price this holiday season.

Why Do I Get More Pimples When I’m on My Period?

novembro 19, 2021 de kwok0781

Ladies, most of us can agree our monthly visit from Aunt Flo isn’t fun.

From mood swings and back pain to cravings and cramps, it brings with it all sorts of unwanted side effects. You may have even noticed acne worsening around that time of the month. Or if your skin is already clear, you might find yourself waking up to new spots, especially on the lower half of the face – cheeks, jawline, chin, and neck.

Are you imagining it or is period acne an actual thing that happens?

Let’s set the record straight: it’s not your imagination!

In fact, menstrual acne is pretty common. 65% of the adult women surveyed in a study reported that their acne symptoms were worse with their menses1.

Why Does Period Acne Happen?

One word. Hormones.

Yup, it all comes down to your hormones.

As you might be aware (because we talk about it so often), at the root of all acne is clogged pores.

Throughout your menstrual cycle, your hormone levels rise and fall. This fluctuation of hormones – namely estrogen and progesterone (the two main female sex hormones), as well as androgens (male sex hormones) – leads to the overproduction of sebum.

When excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells, we have the perfect recipe for clogged pores. Throw in a dollop of bacteria, and we get the infamous, inflamed red spots that pop up before and during our periods.

What Can I Do About Period Acne?

For starters, do not try to pop the pimples. It’ll only lead to more discomfort and may even cause scarring. Continue with your usual skincare routine and have trust in the process.

We recommend applying Clear Out every night, or every alternate night if you already have clear skin. With medical-grade retinol and azelaic acid, it will perpetually flush out clogged pores and make skin less acne-prone.

When you do start to feel a pimple coming on, act fast and dab on Stop Spot* throughout the day to target and treat the spot before it surfaces.

You may also want to try regulating your blood sugar levels by eating less high-GI foods. That means less sugar, white bread, and other processed foods.

Most of all, understand that period acne is completely normal. Get plenty of rest, stress less, and take extra good care of yourself!

How 10 Women Around the World Battled Acne

outubro 6, 2021 de kwok0781

Acne, the most prevalent skin condition in the world, affects over 650 million people worldwide¹. Anyone who’s suffered from it knows how painful or stressful it can be. Due to lack of education and lack of effective acne treatment products, acne is often left untreated, leading to atrophic scarring which is much harder to fix later in life.

There are many factors (direct & indirect) which can cause acne making it difficult to isolate a source and potentially expensive to treat.

Fortunately, clear skin is attainable WITHOUT breaking the bank according to these women. By addressing the four factors that directly contribute to acne², they are able to see clearer skin and prevent breakouts.

Here are their stories.

Note: Their profiles on Instagram are linked so you can view their journey and DM them for questions.

Mim, a teacher from Southampton, had suffered from hormonal cystic acne sobre a combination skin for the past 8 years.

She spent thousands on products which claimed to be effective at stopping acne. When these masks, scrubs and cleansers failed to meet their claims, the fallback excuse would be due to “hormonal acne”, which can’t be controlled.

Mim starting taking contraceptives in an effort to regulate her hormones and she also took antibiotics e prescription topical creams but they did not have a lasting effect in slowing down the breakouts. She was left feeling resigned. “Why can’t I get clear skin?” she questioned until…

She started using the Clear Out (originally designed to clear clogs on acne-prone skin) and noticed a difference almost immediately. Within a month, most of her actives were gone and she was only left with post-acne marks which covered her cheeks.

From the second month, the Lighten Up, started to make a significant difference in fading the appearance of her post-acne red marks and by the third month she had clear skin. For the first time in years, Mim has gone months without using green concealer and can go to work without makeup.

Mim has been exclusively using Clearly Basics. She logs her acne journey on Instagram @mimandskin. Read more about her story here.

Skin still going strong 💪 Used the @clearlybasics cleanser, toner, clear out and protective moisturiser last night. This morning is all about the cleanser and matte hydrator 🥰 (I actually don’t need to use the lighten up every single day now as my hyperpigmentation is gone!). Remember you can get 10% off with the code ‘acneisntugly’ 💷 (remember it has the money back guarantee if you need that little safety net). If you’re worried at all or skeptical please see my journey on my account! I’ve used nothing but clearly basics for 7 months. No doctors, dermatologists, medication, diets or lifestyle changes. I’m as sharing my journey with trialling this product for those of us that can’t go on roacutane and have hit rock bottom. I thought all my acne treatment routes were exhausted and had no other options as I’d tried it all. I began to accept my acne and accept that was how my skin would look. I’m not claiming clearly will clear your skin forever and ‘cure’ you. We can’t cure acne. What I can tell you is, it’s reduced my hyperpigmentation and redness completely and I haven’t had a cyst in over 5 months. My breakouts have reduced significantly and they don’t last as long on my face. My whole experience with acne has drastically changed. It’s gone from severe to mild in under a year just from consistently using high quality ingredients. #skin #skincare #acne #healthyskin #happyskin #clearlybasics

Toni, a stylist from Hertfordshire, has suffered from cystic acne for most of her life.

She had been to the doctors many times and was given creams and tablets which were harsh e burnt a layer off her skin. Instead, she put her trust in high street cosmetic brands but she never saw the progress she had hoped for (or paid for).

Desperate to find a solution, she turned to aestheticians who offered cutting edge treatments that promised the world: dermarollers, vampire facials, microdermabrasion… you name it and she has probably tried it. In total she had spent close to £5,000 in treatments that showed marginal results but her acne kept coming back.

When she stumbled onto Clearly Basics, she thought they were no different than the other brands. However, she was surprised to find how knowledgeable and responsive Clearly Basics is over chat. She was recommended the Complete Trio (Clear Out + Lighten Up + Protective Moisturizer) and decided to give it a try. Toni saw significant improvement in using the Trio and almost all her acne has cleared within the first set. She is only left with post-acne scarring.

Kiana, a data entry specialist from New Jersey, grew up with acne and hyperpigmentation sobre a sensitive skin for most of her teenage and adult life.

Five different dermatologists had tried to treat her acne but they all fell short. She had committed to using “clean” products for a year, eliminating any chemical that could cause harm to her already damaged skin. While her skin responded positively to the natural ingredients, progress was very slow.

When she came across Clearly Basics, she was intrigued as skincare companies rarely use USP certified ingredients (highest grade).

Since she has very sensitive skin, Kiana first used the Clearly Basics’ Protective Moisturizer for two weeks to help strengthen her skin and reduce sensitivity. Then she started to introduce the Clear Out slowly by applying every alternate evening. Within three months, she saw significant improvement in texture e a hyperpigmentation went away.

Kiana logs her acne journey on Instagram @thoughtsofhealing. She talks about the importance of the 3 ingredients (retinol, AZA & pracaxi oil) here.

Ella, an aesthetician and a makeup artist from Manchester, developed adult-onset acne with a vengeance in 2015.

She was fully aware of the potential negative side effects of using prescription oral medication to control her acne (particularly on birth defects³), and was NOT willing to take the risk. So she opted for antibiotics and prescription creams instead.

Unfortunately, the creams were too strong for her, so she finally accepted prescription oral medication as her last resort in 2016 and went through a6-month course of it. Fast forward to 2019, she never ever thought she would ever be able to feel confident in herself and with her skin again!

Ella is currently using the Clear Out‘s (2% retinol + AZA)to keep her skin less acne prone, improves the texture of her skin and slows down the aging process of her skin – giving her the natural glow.

She also loves the Protective Moisturizer as it is loaded with peptides, the building blocks of human skin that stimulate the skin to repair. As the skin strengthens, she sees a decrease in redness and sensitivity.

Alisha, from Berkshire, developed severe acne when she was 15-years-old.

In her desperation to stop the pimples, she has tried every imaginable wash, soap, scrub, peel, mask, and lotion. Her bathroom cabinets were a graveyard of high end and on-trend products claiming to give her ‘perfect skin’. Unfortunately, most of them only made her breakouts worsen.

Alisha then went through 3 rounds of prescription oral medication but her acne would always come back. She talks about the negative side effects from it and it should not be taken lightly.

“A lot of people always asking me what I do to maintain my skin after prescription oral medication. All I can say is ‘Clear Out’ by @clearlybasics is a Godsend ❤️ I started using Clear out after finishing my course of prescription oral medication and it has helped keep acne at bay. It doesn’t leave me overly dry or flakey which most retinol creams did. I wish I had used the Clear Out before using prescription oral medication.”

o Clear Out has been very effective at keeping her clog free so that she can work on scar repair.

Without insurance to cover visits to a dermatologist, Bea spent a lot of time following dermatologists on social media and found that gentler ingredients were more effective for her skin.

When the #acnecommunity started talking about Clearly Basics, Bea was intrigued that there was a product specifically targeted at red acne marks. Within the first Power Duo (Clear Out + Lighten Up) set, Bea had significantly reduced her new breakouts and any breakout that surfaced went away in days rather than weeks. Furthermore, the red scars on her face had virtually disappeared over the course of a month.

Skin update ✨ My skin looks so good ! I’ve had a few of my classmates tell me my skin texture looks so nice and even now 😊 . . If any of you are wondering what products I use that have been giving me positive results, swipe to see my AM and PM products using @clearlybasics . AM routine: I start of with cleanser and cleanse for about 60 seconds ( i read somewhere that 60 seconds is the proper amount of time but not less! But don’t quote me on this 😅) . . 2. Dab a little bit of the Lighten Up mainly focusing on my cheeks and chin. The bottle may be small but it lasts a while! A little goes a long way as long as you’re consistent 😉 . . 3. I quickly apply toner by putting some on my palms and press to my face. I haven’t gotten around to but cotton pads lol so I work with what I have. 4. And to wrap everything up, I apply my matte moisturizer ✨ since my face is oily, the matte Hydrator is best for me 🙂 . . . For P.M, I do everything above but I add in the Clear Out 🙌 the bottle is semi small but as I mentioned either the Lighten Up, a little goes a long way!!! . . . I also make sure I apply sunscreen energy morning especially after ive used Clear Out the night before. Skin may be more sensitive to the sun using retinol so its always good to apply sunscreen 🌞 plus you should be applying sunscreen DAILY anyways 🤷‍♀️

Here’s Why You Might Get More Acne in Autumn

outubro 1, 2021 de kwok0781

Welcoming the first day of October means we have well and truly made the move from summer to autumn. As we leave the sunny season behind, you might think breakouts are no longer a cause of concern as there’ll be less sweat and time spent outdoors.

Thing is, autumn presents its own challenges for those with acne-prone skin.

For one, the change in season means cooler temperatures and lower humidity – not just outside, but indoors too with the dry heat from radiators. With less moisture in the environment, skin becomes more dehydrated. This in turn ramps up oil production. Dry, flaky skin can also lead to more dead skin cells. When these combine with the excess oil, we have the perfect recipe for acne-causing clogged pores.

To combat this, continue using Clear Out (our retinol + AZA lotion) to perpetually flush out clogs and make skin less prone to acne. Gentle and kind to sensitive skin, the lotion can be used throughout the colder months.

It’s also a good idea to add a boost of hydration to your routine to restore skin’s moisture levels and normalize oil production. Matte Hydrator is the go-to moisturizer for those with oily skin, but for other skin types, it can be used as a serum applied just before your moisturizer. Using 100% medical-grade, ultra-low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, it absorbs fully into skin and draws moisture into where it matters most.

As you adjust to colder days, you might also find comfort in longer, hotter showers which can further dry out your skin and disrupt your skin barrier. This leaves it at a higher risk of inflammation and irritation. This is where the nourishing Protective Moisturizer comes to the rescue. Loaded with medical-grade peptides and antioxidants, it strengthens your skin barrier, calms redness, and protects your skin from irritants. If your skin is on the dryer side, you could also top it off with a thicker, non-comedogenic moisturizer.

If you are wearing scarves and beanies to keep yourself warm this season, be sure to wash them regularly! While we love our cosy autumn accessories, they could easily become homes to sweat and bacteria, leading to breakouts.

Another reason you might be seeing more acne in autumn could come down to changes in your diet. From Halloween candy to pumpkin pies and comfort food, consuming more high-glycemic foods could lead to more acne. If you think certain foods could trigger a breakout, consider limiting it for a while but ultimately, remember that the key with diet is moderation. So go ahead and enjoy the many wonderful things this new season brings!

Has the Acne Cleared? Here Are 5 Things to Do Now.

setembro 13, 2021 de kwok0781

You did it.

You were consistent with your skin care plan, you trusted the process, and you stayed patient throughout your journey. Now, you’re seeing clear (or almost clear) skin and acne has become much easier to control. Yay!

It almost feels like the end of a chapter, doesn’t it?

So uh, what now? Can you toss your skincare routine in the bin and move on?

Not quite.

In fact, this ‘post-acne’ stage is crucial. For one, now that the war against acne has ended, it’s time to repair skin and bring it back to peace. For another, a maintenance routine with proper skincare and healthy habits is a must to make sure acne stays away – for good.

Here are five things to do now (and in the long run):

1. Clean up the red and dark marks left by acne.

You know the pinkish red acne marks you get after pimples have flattened?

When a pimple is active, it is inflamed because the body increases blood flow to the tissue surrounding the clogged pore¹. It is the body’s natural response to fighting off the bacterial infection.

After the pimple has flattened, it normally takes 8 to 12 weeks for the blood vessels to return to their original size. The residual blood and dilated blood vessels are what cause red post-acne marks.

It is important to address and fade these red marks early on because if exposed to the sun, they can quickly collect melanin and turn into even more stubborn brown marks2.

Lighten Up is our unique formulation for soothing skin and reducing the appearance of red post-acne marks. Apply it morning and evening to see a significant improvement in skin tone within a month.

If some of these red marks have turned into dark marks, or if you have sun spots and melasma, an easy way to reduce the look of these is to use Dark Mark Defense.

Dark Mark Defense contains potent pigment-regulating agents that fade the appearance of dark spots up to 4x faster than normal. You will see good improvement within three months of use and a significant improvement after six months.

[wcps_product id=”192401″ ][wcps_product id=”192410″ ]

2. Use retinol and AZA to keep skin clear in the long term.

Whether it was prescriptions from your dermatologist or consistent use of Clear Out, no matter how you arrived at clear skin, keeping it clear is key.

Topical agents are the mainstay of maintenance therapy, and these include topical retinoids and AZA3 – both of which are in Clear Out, our special formulation for acne-prone skin.

Clear Out is formulated with BOTH retinol (a gentler type of retinoid) and AZA to perpetually clear clogged pores and make skin less acne-prone. It is perfect for use when you have acne, but is just as helpful as part of your clear skin maintenance plan.

If you have been using Clear Out all along, you can continue using it to keep acne away.

If you have been using other treatments and are looking for a simple and gentler way to keep skin clear for the long run, add Clear Out into your routine.

Since you’re now in maintenance mode, you can use Clear Out on alternate days, at night only. This will keep breakouts away.

What’s more? The retinol in Clear Out can help fight the signs of aging and AZA can further help with post-inflammatory dyspigmentation4.

That’s what we call a win-win-win!

3. Target new spots and stop them from surfacing.

Even after acne has cleared, and even if you’re using Clear Out regularly, a pimple or two will still pop up every now and then. It’s completely normal because hey, we’re human!

These breakouts are likely to come and go fast, but if you would like to tame them before they get super inflamed and out of hand, our new spot treatment gel is here to help.

Stop Spot* is our NEW acne spot treatment gel that can target and treat pimples before they surface. This means they never get a chance to break through and show on the skin. It is also formulated to heal and flatten active pimples so they clear faster.

[wpcs_item ids=”110601″ column=”1″]

4. Adopt an overall healthy lifestyle.

Taking care of your skin starts with taking care of yourself as a whole!

This means ensuring you sleep well, eat well, stress less, exercise more, and check on your mental health often.

Living healthy overall can help improve your skin, keep it clear, and of course, keep your body and mind functioning at their best. What’s there to lose?

Remember to carve out time every day to do things that make you feel relaxed and happy!

5. Continue with a clear skin maintenance routine.

While the treatments you use are likely to change now that the acne has cleared, you still need a proper skin care routine. With Clearly Basics, all you need is 3 steps.

Step 1: Cleanse twice a day with So Fresh (for all skin types) or Balancing Cleanser (for very oily skin).

Step 2: Treat once every 2 days, at night, with Clear Out.

If you have post-acne scars, apply Lighten Up (for red acne marks) and Dark Mark Defense (for dark marks) twice a day.

If you have emerging or active pimples, use Stop Spot* up to three times a day, as needed.

Step 3: Nourish twice a day with Matte Hydrator (for oily-combination skin) or Protective Moisturizer (for dry-combination skin).

In the morning, make sure to top it all off with your favorite non-comedogenic sunscreen.

Once a week, you can also give your skin a gentle chemical peel to exfoliate it and break down excess sebum. Just leave Balancing Cleanser on for 30 minutes to feel all renewed!

You Ask, We Answer: Does Stress Really Cause Acne?

agosto 27, 2021 de kwok0781

Final exams, wedding planning, a deadline looming – stress happens to everyone.

As if dealing with the uncomfortable feelings of stress isn’t enough, many of us also find that our acne gets worse during such times.

Is this just a myth or is there more to it?

What Does the Science Say?

While stress is not a direct cause of acne, research over the years has found a relationship between stress and acne flare-ups1. So yes, it’s not just in our heads.

Stress may not trigger breakouts for those who are not prone to it, but if you already have acne, stress may make it worse. You might have also noticed that the more stressed you are, the more pimples pop up.

A Stanford University study from 2003 found that its sample of students had more stress during exam time (understandably) as well as more severe acne2. Beyond that, they discovered increased acne severity was significantly associated with increased stress levels. This suggests that emotional stress from external sources may have a significant influence on acne.

Why is this the case? There are several reasons:

Increase in Oil Production

As you might already know (because we talk about it so often), at the root of all acne is a clogged pore. What causes pores to clog up is a build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, and excess oil.

When we’re stressed, our bodies release more of the hormone cortisol. This causes our sebaceous glands to ramp up production of oil, leading to more clogged pores and acne3.

A study of cultured (aka artificially grown) cells also found that cortisol, at a higher level, decreased the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA) by 50%4. Because HA is our skin’s natural moisturizer, this finding supports the link between increased cortisol levels and oil production. That is, having less HA can dehydrate skin, leading to more oil being produced as compensation.

If you find your skin is oily but dehydrated, you’ll love having the Matte Hydrator in your routine. Formulated with medical-grade ultra-low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, it will easily absorb into skin and leave a clean, matte finish.

Slower Healing

One study investigated the effects of psychological stress on wound healing. Researchers studied 13 women caring for a relative with Alzheimer’s disease (a likely source of stress) and 13 controls. All the women underwent a 3·5 mm punch biopsy wound. What the study found was that wound healing took significantly longer for the caregivers than the controls, suggesting stress could negatively affect wound repair5.

This means that when stressed, wounds, including acne, can take longer to heal. And when pimples stay longer on the skin, they can be more susceptible to increasing in severity.

Poorer Lifestyle Choices

Apart from what goes on inside our bodies when we’re stressed ,the negative emotions we experience can also lead us to poorer habits and choices. We could be eating more sugary foods, sleeping less, or deprioritizing our skincare routines. These can all lead acne to worsen.

How Can I Reduce Stress?

Whether you’re facing short-term stress from a big event you have right now, or more chronic stress from the many responsibilities in your life, it is crucial to find ways to manage it. If not for the sake of your skin, for your overall health.

What is relaxing to others may not be to you so give yourself time to find what works. Many people have benefited from yoga, meditation, exercise, extra sleep, and aromatherapy so consider making room for these in your schedule. You could also try knitting, painting, talking to a friend, or anything that makes you happy and helps you unwind.

While reducing stress can help give you clearer and healthier skin, it is important to note it should not be considered an acne treatment. You still need proper skin care to not only clear current acne, but prevent them from forming in the future.

A bonus is that your skincare routine can be a wonderful practice in mindfulness, which can help you slow down and relax!

Acne in Men: What You Need to Know

julho 29, 2021 de kwok0781

Ah, acne.

You may be all too familiar with it as your constant companion throughout high school. Perhaps you grew out of it as you entered adulthood – only to have it return now. Or perhaps it never left you.

While in adult cases of acne, women are affected more frequently than men1, these red spots and bumps are a very real concern for many, regardless of gender. In fact, as male skin differs from female skin, you may find that you experience worse breakouts than your female friends.

So how can men take better care of their acne-prone skin?

First, we need to understand why you get acne in the first place.

What Causes Acne in Men?

At the root of all acne is a clogged pore, which happens when excess oil mixes with dead skin cells to create a sticky plug. This is the same for males and females.

For men with acne, changes in testosterone levels are often the biggest trigger. Testosterone is a key androgen (male sex hormone) responsible for giving males their traditionally masculine characteristics, such as a deep voice and bigger muscles. The hormone also stimulates the production of sebum, which means an increase in testosterone may lead to excess oil being produced. This in turn leads to clogged pores and breakouts2.

In fact, research has found that acne patients produced higher rates of testosterone in their skin than people without acne3.

Levels of this hormone tend to rise during puberty for boys (and girls), which is why so many teens get acne. While women have testosterone too, men produce more, and factors such as stress, exercise, age, and genes can affect the level of testosterone in your body.

More Factors That Can Lead to Acne in Men

  • Dieta
While the acne-diet connection isn’t yet clear-cut, research has shown that consuming a lot of high-glycemic foods and cow’s milk may contribute to acne.
  • Genetics
If your parents have acne, you’re more likely to have it too!
  • Steroids
Taking anabolic steroids or corticosteroid medications can lead to higher testosterone levels and cause acne flare-ups4.
  • Facial Hair
Rocking a beard or mustache? Check if your facial hair may be trapping bacteria and oil.
  • Sweat
Sweating, whether from the summer sun or exercise, may make acne worse.
  • Estresse
When you’re emotionally stressed, your body makes extra hormones that can cause breakouts5.
  • The Wrong Skincare Products
Using products that are too harsh on your skin or that contain pore-clogging ingredients may be the culprit.
  • Greasy Hair Products
Similar to skincare products, if you use hair care products that are too oily, they can get onto your face and clog up your pores– leading to acne.

9 Things to Do for Clear, Healthy Skin

  1. Identify your skin type.

Knowing your skin type will help you better care for your skin. Your skin may be dry and flaky, oily and shiny, or a combination of both. It could also be oily but dehydrated, or even sensitive. Check out this easy guide to determining your skin type to start!

  1. Go for acne-friendly skincare products.

Take extra care when buying new skincare products. Check the labels to make sure they are non-comedogenic (meaning they won’t clog pores) and look through the ingredients list for potential irritants, such as fragrances.

Designed for acne-prone and sensitive skin, you can rest assured that the Clearly Basics line is 100% non-comedogenic and kind to skin.

  1. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser.

Give your skin a thorough cleanse without overstripping it of its natural oils and irritating it and remember to wash your face with lukewarm – not hot – water.

  1. Use retinol.

Retinol is the gold standard when it comes to clearing acne-causing clogged pores. Clear Out is our revolutionary retinol-powered lotion. Apply it once every night to flush out the clogs and make skin less acne-prone.

  1. Moisturize – yes, even when you have oily skin.

Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer such as the Matte Hydrator. As a hyaluronic acid serum, it can keep your skin nourished so that it won’t become so dry it compensates by producing even more pore-clogging oil.

  1. Remember your sunscreen.

No skincare routine is complete without sunscreen. Go for a lightweight, broad-spectrum one with at least SPF 35+ and a PA+++ rating.

  1. Take extra care when shaving.

Always use a clean razor and shave in the direction of hair growth. You can also moisturize before and after you shave to help minimize irritation. Use the antioxidant-rich Protective Moisturizer to calm redness, reduce skin sensitivity, and strengthen your skin barrier.

  1. Adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Living healthy overall can help improve your skin. Get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, eat well, and schedule plenty of time to rest and de-stress.

  1. Mind the sweat when exercising.

To prevent the heat and sweat from making acne worse, use a towel to gently pat sweat off during your workout and wash your face after. Add in a shower if possible and change into clean clothes.

Does Diet Really Affect Acne? We Look at the Evidence.

julho 5, 2021 de kwok0781

Have you ever been told to cut out chocolate or stop eating your favorite snacks because they ‘make acne worse’? The internet is full of articles on anti-acne diets that claim to improve your skin but are they anything more than myths?

For decades, the relationship between diet and acne has been debated. Even today, there is no consensus that changing your diet is a good way to manage acne.

That said, there is evidence that certain foods may play a role in acne and its treatment1.

What Does the Science Say?

In a recent systematic review, researchers looked at 11 interventional clinical trials and 42 observational studies published from 2009 to 2020. The results showed that high-glycemic foods, certain dairy products, fast food, and chocolate can promote acne whereas fruits, vegetables, and fatty acids can protect against acne2.

Another study of 24,452 participants also found a correlation between the chances of having current acne and the consumption of milk, and fatty and sugary products. Compared with those who have never had acne, those with current acne were 54% more likely to consume a diet with lots of high-fat and high-sugar foods3.

Let’s take a closer look at the research on what could be the two biggest acne-causing culprits in our diet: high-glycemic foods and cow’s milk.

High-Glycemic Foods

From white bread and white rice to potato chips and sugary drinks, high-glycemic foods cause your blood sugar to rise quickly. As you can imagine, these are common foods many of us enjoy consuming. We mean, milkshakes are yum!

Thing is, studies suggest a low-glycemic diet may reduce how much acne we have4. Low-glycemic foods include your fresh vegetables, some fruits, and beans. For example, a US study of 2,258 patients who were placed on a low-glycemic diet to lose weight found that the diet also reduced their acne. 87% of patients said they had less acne and 91% said they needed less acne medication5.

It is possible that a low-glycemic diet may reduce acne because it stops blood sugar spikes. These spikes can cause inflammation and increased sebum production, both of which can lead to acne4.

Cow’s Milk

Some studies suggest that drinking cow’s milk may be linked to more (and more severe) acne4. In a Malaysian study, 88 patients were asked to complete a food diary for three days. It found that the patients who had acne consumed more cow’s milk and high-glycemic foods than the patients without acne6. A possible explanation for this is that some of the hormones in milk cause inflammation throughout the body, clogging pores and leading to acne4.

Similarly, a 2019 study noted a positive relationship between acne occurrence and milk consumption, including whole, low-fat, and skim milk. However, it found no significant association between getting acne and consuming yogurt and cheese7. This suggests that while milk may increase the risk of getting acne, products made from milk may not.

So, What Should I Eat?

While more research is needed to confirm whether certain foods can cause or worsen acne, if you would like to see if your skin can benefit from diet changes, you can consider trying this out for a week:

Eat more low-glycemic foods such as whole grains, vegetables, berries, nuts, seeds, and fruits with skin (e.g. pears and apples)

Limit cow’s milk and high-glycemic foods such as sugar, pastries, soft drinks, white bread, white potatoes, and white rice

At the end of the week, notice if there are changes to your acne.

But remember, the key with diet is moderation. As consultant dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto puts it, “Labelling food as the problem is too simplistic and fails to take account of the multi-factorial nature of acne, which includes variations in hormones and genetics.”8

As such, while good nutrition is important for your skin8 (and overall health), never be afraid to enjoy your favorite foods every once in a while.

Fighting Acne Needs More Than a Diet Change

While diet changes may help improve your acne, getting and keeping clear skin takes more than that. It includes leading a healthier lifestyle all around, from managing stress and sleeping well to using acne-friendly skincare.

Clearly Basics is a skincare line made for acne-prone and sensitive skin. This means all our formulations are gentle enough to care for vulnerable skin yet effective enough to clear clogged pores and prevent future breakouts. Shop the line here.

Top 7 Summer Tips for Acne-prone Skin

junho 21, 2021 de kwok0781

It’s officially summer!

From seaside to poolside, it’s the season of sun-soaked fun and we can’t wait to spend more time outdoors!

While there’s much to love about the warmer weather, it could also mean more breakouts as our skin gets exposed to more sweat, heat, and humidity.

This means we need to give our skin extra TLC, especially if we have acne-prone skin.

Keep these top tips in mind to prevent breakouts and minimize sun damage for happy, healthy skin:

1. Go for a Lighter Moisturizer

If you’ve been using a heavier, creamier moisturizer during the colder months, you might want to switch to a more lightweight formula in the summer as your skin begins to produce more oil.

o Protective Moisturizer is light, non-comedogenic, and won’t leave your skin feeling greasy. It is also packed with resveratrol, a potent antioxidant that relieves redness and protects the skin from damage caused by UV rays, pollution, and other harmful agents in the environment. That’s sure to come in handy as we spend more time outdoors this season.

[wpcs_item ids=”41″ column=”1″]

Remember to moisturize daily, even if your skin already feels oily.

Not convinced? Check out these five reasons to moisturize every day this summer, even when you have oily, acne-prone skin.

2. Lock in Hydration

Being out in the sun or even chilling in the AC all day can strip your skin of much-needed moisture.

Use a facial mist to freshen your skin throughout the day and add humectants such as hyaluronic acid to lock in the moisture. Holding 1000x its weight in moisture, hyaluronic acid helps keep skin soft, plump, and dewy. It will also prevent dehydrated skin, which can lead to increased oil production and more acne.

o Matte Hydrator, formulated with the highest quality of 100% medical-grade ultra-low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, is perfect for summertime hydration. Fast-absorbing and oil-free, use it on its own as a moisturizer for oily skin types or under the Protective Moisturizer as a serum.

[wpcs_item ids=”39″ column=”1″]

3. Apply (& Reapply) Sunscreen

We know, we know.

You’ve heard this a thousand times before.

But if it’ll get you to remember your sunscreen, we don’t mind repeating it a thousand times more.

Whether it’s lowering your risk of skin cancer or keeping premature aging at bay, sunscreen is a must to protect you from harmful UV rays.

Choose a broad-spectrum, non-comedogenic sunscreen with at least SPF 35 and a PA+++ rating. Our favorite is the EltaMD UV Clear with SPF 46. Designed for acne-prone skin, it’s fragrance-free, oil-free, and goes on well under makeup.

Whichever sunscreen you decide on, be sure to reapply every 2 hours for maximum protection all day long.

4. Keep the Sweat in Check

When sweat mixes with the bacteria and oils on our skin, it can clog pores and cause breakouts. But truth is, from picnics at the park to walks by the beach, there’s no escaping sweat in the summer.

Still, we can take extra care to make sure it doesn’t make our skin a playground for pimples. For one, hit the shower immediately after working out or sweating. If you’re out and about, gently blot sweat with a clean cloth to avoid irritation. You can also try wearing more breathable clothing to prevent excess heat and friction on your skin.

5. Give Skin a Thorough Cleanse

With all that your skin goes through in the day, it deserves an extra good cleanse in the evening to get rid of all the sweat, dirt, and excess oils.

However, be sure to choose a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type so it isn’t overly drying and harsh. If you have oily or combination skin, we recommend the Balancing Cleanser, formulated with glycolic acid (an AHA) and salicylic acid (a BHA) to give skin a deep cleanse without stripping away its natural oils. You can also leave this cleanser on for 30 minutes in the evening to get a gentle peel! Just be sure to apply sunscreen in the day (as you would anyway) as acids can make skin more sensitive to the sun.

For all skin types, So Fresh is a great go-to as it has protective antioxidants and plant extracts that give skin a minty tingle to notify when you’ve washed off enough oil. This way, you can get the perfect level of cleansing, always!

[wpcs_item ids=”47,116031″ column=”2″]

You’ll also want to avoid cleansing too often as it can break down the skin’s protective barrier. Twice daily, even during the summer, is enough.

6. Defend Your Skin Against Dark Spots

After active acne has cleared, you might find you’re left with red marks on the skin. These are caused by residual blood and dilated blood vessels. It is a must to fade these red marks quickly because they can collect melanin and become stubborn brown marks when exposed to the sun. This is an especially big risk during the summer months when we’re out in the sun more.

Use Lighten Up to fade the appearance of red marks before they become brown spots. If you already have brown acne marks, or even brown sun spots and age spots, Dark Mark Defense and its potent anti-pigmenting agents can help fade the look of them up to 4x faster!

[wpcs_item ids=”3792, 47430″ column=”2″]

7. Continue to Use Clear Out Every Evening

While there are certain changes you might want to make to your summer skincare routine, such as switching to a lighter moisturizer or adding a sun-spot-fighting product, one key step remains a constant – Clear Out.

Gentle enough to use on sensitive skin, even during the summer, the medical-grade retinol and AZA will continue to flush out clogged pores and help you prevent future breakouts.

You Ask, We Answer: Why Is My Skin Stinging?

maio 26, 2021 de kwok0781

🎵 This girl is on fire 🎵 – but her skin should not be.

Stinging, burning, inflamed.

These are uncomfortable sensations we might have experienced more than once, especially when we have sensitive skin.

While a little tingle that lasts a few seconds is nothing to worry about, when it becomes a sharp sting that’s almost unbearable, it’s a sign something’s wrong.

Skincare should not be painful, and no, the stinging should not be embraced as a sign the product is working.

So, why is your skin stinging when applying a product? Here are some possible reasons:

#1 You Are Exfoliating Way Too Much.

While exfoliation can be a great addition to your skincare routine, helping reveal brighter skin and reduce clogged pores, too much of it can lead to a damaged skin barrier.

Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, and plays the very important role of defending you from environmental threats such as bacteria and UV rays. When this protective barrier is compromised, your skin can become raw and sensitive, giving you that stinging sensation you wouldn’t otherwise feel.

How to Fix It: Stop exfoliating with harsh scrubs that can cause micro-tears in your skin and avoid exfoliating too frequently, especially if you’re new to skincare and your skin hasn’t yet acclimated to it. Instead, opt for a gentle chemical peel, such as with the Balancing Cleanser, once a week. Every morning and night, apply the Protective Moisturizer, which has been specially formulated with peptides and antioxidants to repair and re-strengthen your skin barrier.

#2 You Have Dry and Dehydrated Skin.

Dry and dehydrated skin is also a sign of a weakened skin barrier because the barrier is what keeps your skin from losing much-needed moisture. If your skin feels dry or is peeling, or even cracking, you might feel stinging when applying products.

How to Fix It: The key is to return and retain the moisture in your skin. Use a gentle cleanser such as So Fresh, which won’t over-strip skin of its natural oils, and follow with the nourishing Protective Moisturizer. For extra hydration, layer on the Matte Hydrator before applying the Protective Moisturizer.

#3 You’re Having a Reaction to an Allergen or Irritant.

When your skin stings after applying a product, it most likely means your skin does not agree with one or some of the ingredients in it. Possible allergens and irritants include fragrances, dyes, and fruits such as lemon and grapefruit.

Everyone’s skin is unique, so what is perfectly safe for others might not be for you. If you’re constantly experiencing irritation from different products, it’s best to check for any common ingredients that could be the culprits.

How to Fix It: Immediately wash the product off your face and gently pat dry. Then, try and identify what it is that could be causing the negative reaction so you can remove it from your routine moving forward. Always check the ingredients list for potential offenders before purchasing new products and always do a patch test before applying them to your entire face – just to be extra safe!

To patch test, apply the new product on the skin right behind your ear or on the inside of your wrist. These areas are best because they more closely mimic the skin on our face, which is thinner and more sensitive. If you do not see or feel any signs of a negative reaction after a day, you can try applying the product on your face.

#4 You’ve Just Started Using Clear Out.

Our top acne-fighting lotion, Clear Out, uses medical-grade retinol to promote the shedding of dead skin cells and flush out clogged pores.

How to Fix It: Slowly introduce skin to retinol by applying Clear Out on alternate evenings. The stinging sensation should not last more than a few seconds. Once skin has adjusted and the stinging is gone, you can safely apply Clear Out every evening.

Not sure if the stinging you’re experiencing is normal?

Send any questions you have our way via Messenger chat or Instagram DM (@clearlybasics). However, if stinging persists for more than a few minutes or becomes too much to handle, check in with your dermatologist as soon as you can!
