Should I See A Dermatologist?

We should always opt for measures that are not invasive before jumping to measures that can cause negative side effects. However, if you are getting more than four new acne cysts (greater than 8mm in diameter) per month and they are causing damage to the surrounding tissue, it is time to consider prescription medication.

Algorithm for Treating Acne

Dermatologists follow algorithms based on how your body responds to treatment. They opt for non-invasive measures that should be sufficient in stopping your acne to see how your body responds before moving up the ladder to measures which carry more negative side effects.

The Clear Out will address comedonal, papular and pustular acne with minimal negative side effects. The formulation combines a topical retinoid and AZA which are top choices in the Acne Treatment Algorithm.

However, if you have nodular acne (greater than 8mm in diameter) and more than four new cysts surface per month, it is time to consult a dermatologist regarding oral medication. Your dermatologist will assess treatment options and walk you through the potential negative side effects.

Dermatologist vs GP

If your healthcare and insurance allow, it would be better to go straight to a dermatologist than to visit a general practitioner (GP). A dermatologist is a specialized doctor who undergoes further training for skin, hair and nails. They generally have a lot more experience in handling acne, acne look-alikes and acne due to hormonal imbalances.

Scar Repair

Dermatologists do not have many topical lotions which are effective in fading post-acne red or brown marks. To augment medication prescribed by your dermatologist, consider the scar repair set which is designed to fade the appearance of red acne marks as well as brown acne marks.

Additionally, for those who have been on prescription topical medications, the Protective Moisturizer will help considerably to repair and rebuild your skin:

Getting Your Foundation Right

As mentioned in the Getting to Know Your Skin email, it is our recommendation to discontinue use of liquid or long wear foundations. Generally, these products are occlusive and lead to the formation of closed comedones. Opt for mineral based foundations instead.
